Synthetic Motor Oil Vs. Conventional Motor Oil

Ever since synthetic motor oil came on the market, people have wondered if they should use it in their car, truck or SUV. Should you? It depends on a few things. Technically, synthetic motor oil outperforms its conventional counterpart, but that doesn’t mean you have to use it. United Auto Care still offers both options to its customers for those who want to stick to the tried-and-true oil of old. Here some reasons why synthetic is superior, however, to help you decide which oil is best for your automobile.

Manufacturing Process

We don’t know exactly how synthetic motor oil is made because each manufacturer of it has proprietary processes in place that they aren’t about to share with anyone else. We do know synthetic motor oil is made in laboratories, however. There is a combination of ingredients that go into synthetic motor oil, some of which are extracted from crude just like conventional motor oil and some of which are extracted from other organic materials like natural gas. The one thing that is standard across the board is synthetic’s oil purity. It is heavily refined and filtered, which makes it better for your vehicle.

Additives

Another thing that makes synthetic oil better than conventional motor oil is additives. Manufacturers add chemicals to synthetic motor oil to turn it into the six-million-dollar man of motor oils. These additives help it withstand extreme engine and external temperatures, which is why many vehicles in the southwest use synthetic in the summer and vehicles in the north use synthetic in winter. The additives also help keep the oil clean and prevent it from thickening or becoming viscous. This protects your engine, as dirty motor oil can wreak havoc and damage the engine so far as to kill it.

Durability

The additives also make synthetic motor oil more durable. This oil lasts longer than conventional motor oil, which means you don’t have to change it as often. Depending on the manufacturer, year, and model of your vehicle, you may be able to drive as much as 10,000 miles to 15,000 miles between oil changes, which offsets the extra cost of synthetic. Even if you can’t drive that far between oil changes, most manufacturers recommended synthetic oil changes every 7,500 miles, which is more than twice the duration for conventional motor oil.
