Nobody ever wants to get stranded on the side of the road but it can happen to the best of us. Do you know what to do if your car breaks down? Most people never think about it happening to them and when it does, they panic and create dangerous situations. Avoid this by following some tried-and-true steps to keep you and your vehicle safe should you stall out. United Auto Care can help after the fact by determining what is wrong with your vehicle and fixing it. Here’s what to do in the meantime.
Pull Over if You Can
If you notice your vehicle acting funny, pull over to safety right away. If you are on the freeway, this would be to the shoulder; if you are on surface streets, this would be to the curb or into the nearest parking lot. The bottom line is if you can get your vehicle out of traffic before it dies, do so.
Alert Oncoming Traffic
Turn on your hazard lights right away and then make a mental note of any dashboard warning lights or other signals something was wrong with your vehicle. Did you notice a strange smell or sound? Is there smoke? What happened right before your car, truck, or SUV broke down? What happened?
Determine how safe it is to exit your vehicle. If you’re on the freeway shoulder, do not exit out of the driver’s side, as this places you in harm’s way. Rather, scoot over and exit out of the passenger door. Open your hood and place flares or traffic triangles if you have them to let drivers know you’re stalled.
If you’re at the curb on a city street, exit your vehicle when it’s safe and do the above. If you’re in a parking lot, you should still pop the hood to signal you’re having car trouble. A good Samaritan may stop and offer to help. No matter where you are, note your position exactly. You’ll need this information.
